Welcome to today’s ‘Two Minute Tuesday’ video where I answer a question I am frequently asked about guitar tones. Many inexperienced guitarists connect their Fender Stratocaster or Gibson Les Paul directly in to their amplifier and expect to be able to imitate the sound of their favourite players i.e Hank Marvin, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix etc. This is just not going to happen with incorporated built in effects. The best thing a player can do is utilize just the speaker by bypassing the chain of effects and using some good quality hardware pedals like Boss, Dunlop, MXR etc. Purchasing a multi-effects modeller to process your own sounds is another good option. I personally use the Line 6 Pod XT Live for my live performances which they have now discontinued, but they make some really good newer models that can be viewed on their website.
Built in effects work fine if you are having a jam session or just kicking about jamming with your buddies . For the serious dedicated musician I highly advise investing your hard earned cash in to some serious gear that you know will get the job done. I spent a lot of money in my early career buying cheaper equipment that I hoped would do the job and discovered that most of the time that wasn’t always the case and ended up buying more gear than I actually needed in the long run. If you pay the cash now you’ll get instant satisfaction and equipment will last you a lifetime! Pedals are very robust and rugged, designed for touring and heavy wear and tear, they are very unlikely to fail on you.
