BIO:
Hi, my name is Neville Campbell-Barker I was born in Coventry England in 1975 (49) I would describe myself musically as an instrumentalist of guitars and fretted instruments I dabble on the keyboards and have been known to sing a bit…
I wasn’t really into playing guitar until I was 17 1/2 years of age … but I liked music a lot. My dad had a decent record collection when we lived in Coventry, England ( Vinyl and cassette) this was before the CD was even about! I’d often sit in our living room (or Den) listening to these old recordings by groups such as The Beatles, The Moody Blues, ELO, Eric Clapton, Hank Marvin and the Shadows, Cliff Richard, and various others …When I was about 12 years old I started listening to my sister’s records .. kinda punk rock stuff like the Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, Adam Ant, Dr and the Medics, Billy Idol and Sinead O’Connor… I later listened to my older brother’s records (when he wasn’t looking) which included Queen, George Michael, and 80’s Compilations. I remember that Brian Mays guitar had a big impact on me, although I knew nothing of how to play one at that age (around 13 years old) I later got into a type of dance music called Rave (which was very big in the UK during the late ’80s. Later on, when I was around 17 (and when my dad bought me my first guitar, although I wouldn’t pick it up until 6 months later) I started getting into UK indie bands such as Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses, EMF, and Faith no more. I got into the student scene (I was an Art and design/photography student until I was 18) during this time my friends got me into rock music such as Guns and Roses, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana (although Nirvana was later coined as grunge) and Rage Against the Machine. I started hanging out with these two guys called Dez and Craig … Craig was attending the same college as me although he was on another course, my twin brother introduced him to me … we got on well and talked about music/ bands all through our lunchtime breaks. Craig knew Dez and we all met up at the local student hangout called the Dog and Trumpet in Coventry city center (where my future wife worked during her university holidays). We all got on great .. our posse consisted of Me, my twin brother, Dez, Craig, and a guy who lived behind us in Coventry called Robert … The Dog and Trumpet played all the best Rock, indie, Grunge, and metal music that the world had to offer at that time (around 1991-92) Dez introduced me to Metallica which I thought was amazing.. the black album something I listened to it a lot … although I had no clue of how to play Metal .. it sounded so fierce and otherworldly to me. I sat in my bedroom a lot playing that first acoustic guitar my dad bought me … it was a relatively cheap guitar but wasn’t dreadful… I struggled to tune it at times but managed to get by. The first song I learned to play on it was Knocking On Heavens Door by Guns and Roses (I had no clue it was a Bob Dylan song). I remember seeing Guns at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert and being blown away by that song (and Metallica, Extreme, and Def Leopard). I started practicing in earnest from that day forth… there is of course a lot more to this story I’ll cover in the interview.
