Apache is a 1954 American Western film directed by Robert Aldrich and starring Burt Lancaster, Jean Peters, and John McIntire. The film was based on the novel Broncho Apache by Paul Wellman, published in 1936. It was Aldrich’s first color film.
After the surrender of the great leader Geronimo, Massai—the last Apache warrior—is captured and sent on a prison train to a reservation in Florida. However, he escapes to Oklahoma and returns to his homeland to win back his wife and settle down to grow crops. His pursuers, however, have other ideas.
Apache (instrumental)
Apache” is a song written by Jerry Lordan and first recorded by Bert Weedon. Lordan played the song on the ukulele for the Shadows while on tour, and because he liked the song, the group released their own version, which topped the UK Singles Chart for five weeks in mid-1960. The Shadows’ guitarist, Hank Marvin, developed the song’s distinctive echo and vibrato sound. After hearing the Shadows’ version, Danish guitarist Jørgen Ingmann released a cover of the song in November 1960, which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.
A 1973 version by the Incredible Bongo Band has been called “the national anthem of hip-hop”. Although this version was not a hit upon its release, the long percussion break has been sampled numerous times on hip-hop and dance songs since the 1980s. In March 2005, Q magazine ranked the Shadows’ “Apache” at number 96 on its list of the 100 greatest guitar songs.
